IPL 2020, CSK vs DC HIGHLIGHTS: Shikhar Dhawan scored his maiden IPL century as Delhi Capitals (DC) outclassed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on matchday 34 of the Indian Premier League season 13 at Sharjah.

In the quest for their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title this season, Shreyas Iyer-led Delhi Capitals (DC) continued their dominant run with a crucial win over MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday. Fresh from a morale-boosting win over David Warner's Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Dhoni-led CSK suffered their sixth defeat of the season as they were outclassed by a Shikhar Dhawan-inspired Delhi Capitals on matchday 34 of the ongoing IPL 2020 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Extending their winning run in the cash-rich league, Iyer-led DC edged past CSK by five wickets in a final-over thriller. Continuing with the developing trend of batting first, Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat at the famous Sharjah Stadium. Making the most of the sluggish track, premier batsman Faf Du Plessis continued his dream run with willow and scored his fourth half-century of the season.

Joining forces with the premier South African batsman after Shane Watson's (36) departure, star batsman Ambati Rayudu played a small cameo along with Ravindra Jadeja (33) to propel CSK towards a challenging 179 for four in 20 overs. While Du Plessis (58) top-scored for the Dhoni-led side, Rayudu remained unbeaten with Jadeja to help CSK finish strong in the death overs.

Rabada becomes the fastest bowler to take 50 wickets

While Anrich Nortje bagged a brace of wickets (2/44), pace ace Kagiso Rabada scripted history with yet another economical spell for the Delhi Capitals. Rabada, who has been on a wicket-taking spree since the elite competition kicked off in the UAE removed danger-man Du Plessis in the 15th over. With the wicket, the South African became the fastest bowler to scalp 50 wickets in the history of IPL.

Dhawan demolishes CSK with maiden ton

Veteran batsman Shikhar Dhawan took the potent CSK bowling unit to the cleaners as the Indian southpaw played a gem of an innings to help DC battle past CSK in match No.34 of the cash-rich league. Dhawan was also spared by CSK fielders on a number of occasions during DC's chase of 180 at Sharjah. Cashing on his blazing start and CSK's fielding horror show, Dhawan went strength to strength and notched up his maiden IPL century. The DC opener scored an unbeaten 101 off 57 balls with 14 fours and one six and took DC over the finish line.

Why Jadeja bowled the final over?

Axar Patel clobbered three sixes in the final over to set up a memorable win for the Delhi Capitals. Patel's 21 off 5 in the last over remained an underrated knock courtesy Dhawan's batting masterclass. During the intense chase, Jadeja was handed the responsibility to bowl the final over by Dhoni, a move which backfired for CSK and handed them their sixth defeat of the season. Speaking after the match, Dhoni revealed that death-overs specialist Dwayne Bravo was not fit to close things for CSK at the time. "Bravo was not fit. He went out and we were not sure if he would be able to come back," Dhoni said.

Playoff battle heats up for CSK from here

Another defeat in the IPL 2020 can easily put CSK on the brink of elimination. The former three-time champions have won only three games out of a possible nine this season. Dhoni-led CSK side is placed at the sixth spot in the IPL 2020 points table after three wins and six defeats. CSK only have a day's break to prepare for their upcoming clash against 2008 champions Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Monday. Keeping the unpredictability of this season's IPL in check, CSK will now be playing all of their next games as virtual eliminators.
